Excavation in the old city of Bolsward

Our excavation in the centre of Bolsward (Friesland, The Netherlands) is followed with great interest by the local population.

In the framework of the art project 11Fountains, part the of the programmes Leeuwarden-Friesland European Capital of Culture, a unique public well, created by top international artists from eleven different countries, is being built in each of the eleven Friesian cities of the Elfstedentocht (Eleven cities tour).

The artwork will stand in front of the entrance of the famous Martinikerk (Martin Church).

It is during the foundation works of the future fountain that many medieval and early modern burials were discovered. Now our archaeologist team is excavating the area and the interest of the local population and media in the operations is ongoing.
